How long does it take to tune a piano? It takes approximately 90 minutes to tune a piano well and possibly longer if it's been more than a year since your last tuning. If it's been several years, your technician may need to make two service calls to get your piano back in tune.
Can't I just get a tuning hammer and tune it myself: Learning to properly tune a piano can take up to three years or more. Even with computer tuning devices, the tuner's ear still requires lots of training to hear and adjust the things that even the computer can't hear. Many people with good pitch or even perfect pitch soon realize that piano tuning is a completely different way of listening and requires the ability to hear sounds in the upper range of human hearing. Put simply, if you want to learn, find a good teacher and spend a year or more practicing on your own piano. If you just want your piano back in tune, hire a professional and save yourself the frustration.
Will keeping my piano on an inside wall, help keep it in tune? This is left-over advice from a half century ago when exterior walls weren't always insulated. The biggest detriment to your piano's tuning is a change in temperature. With modern construction, unless your hand gets cold when placed a few inches from the wall, feel free to put your piano anywhere in the home. You should definitely avoid sunlight, hot/cold air registers and anywhere in the home where temperature and humidity rise and fall during the day.
